viernes, el veintinueve de enero del dos mil diez
Today’s Agenda:
1. Discuss upcoming weekend plans, answering our fundamental question: “¿Qué vas a hacer durante el fin de semana?”
2. Listen to and sing our song of the week: “Bonito.”
3. Establish new gestures for:
--escoge algo
--escoge a alguien
--cuesta
--los encuentra
CULTURAL NOTE: **Quick tangent off of our discussion about how money denominations are traditionally written in Spanish. Traditionally, the punctuation used for money is reversed in Spanish. So, for instance, $1,000,000.00 would traditionally be written as $1.000.000,00.
4. Review yesterday’s homework: 6-1 & 6-2.
Nice observation that we do not capitalize the titles Mr./Mrs./Miss in Spanish if they are in the middle of a sentence. It is perfectly correct to write, for instance, “¿Cómo está Ud., señor García?”
Homework: Consider making flashcards for our new vocabulary!

--I found………..……………..[pretérito]…………….……….encontré
--we were looking for……..[imperfecto]…………………..buscábamos
--he was writing…….……...[imperfecto]………………….escribía
--she bathed………………….[pretérito]…………………….se bañó
--I was showering………….[imperfecto]……………..…..me duchaba
--they hung up……………...[pretérito]…………………….colgaron
--we tended to………….……[imperfecto]………………….solíamos
5. Receive our chapter six pink packet and begin to define the vocabulary.

jueves 28 de enero de 2010
jueves, el veintiocho de enero del dos mil diez
Today’s Agenda:
1. Receive the final exams and review them.
2. Listen to our song of the week: “Bonito.” Nice job catching the last three missing phrases: el fin, escucha, da.
3. Write more precise cultural notes for yesterday’s discussion about the pronunciation difference (distinción) that we hear the song "Bonito," and in many parts of Spain. If you were absent, please copy a neighbor’s notes upon returning.
4. Finish defining most of our chapter 6 vocabulary.
5. Establish gestures for:
--la falda larga
--los pantalones cortos
--trabaja en una tienda
--recibe
--está de moda
6. Begin the homework.
Homework: 6-1 & 6-2 in the workbook.
Español Dos (2):
Today’s Agenda:
1. Practice applying accents to unfamiliar words based upon our current (and still incomplete, just to be clear) knowledge of accent rules:
ACCENT RULES
--90% of the time, accents are used to tell us where to “punch” the word. They help us pronounce a word correctly! This makes pronouncing new words in Spanish very easy for us.
--10% of the time accents are used to distinguish a different meaning of a word pronounced the same way (él/el, sólo/solo, sí/si, etc.)
--You must HEAR a word to know whether an accent is needed or not.
--Any words ending in a vowel, n or s have the natural stress on the 2nd to last syllable. If the word doesn’t follow this rule, we MUST write in an accent mark where we hear the stress / “punch.”
--Any words ending in a different letter have the natural stress on the last syllable. If the word doesn’t follow this rule, we MUST write in an accent mark where we hear the stress / “punch.”
--A dipthong is the combination of a “weak” vowel (i, u) with a “strong” vowel (a, e, o) to make just ONE SOUND. A dipthong is also the combination of two “weak vowels” (i, u) to make just ONE SOUND. Examples include: “ciu/dad,” “bai/le,” “fuer/te,” & “es/tu/dian.”
2. Listen to our song of the week: “Desde que llegaste.” Nice job catching the last three missing phrases: palabras, desde, despertarme.
3. Use our blue, imperfect packet to practice writing some imperfect & preterite verbs. First decide whether it communicates something in the preterite (over-with ACTION) or the imperfect (DESCRIPTION in the past).
--I was jumping……………..[imperfecto]………………….saltaba
--he jumped…………………..[pretérito]……………………..saltó
--we were listening………...[imperfecto]………………….escuchábamos
--they used to listen……….[imperfecto]………………….escuchaban
--you bought………………….[pretérito]……………………..compraste
--you would buy (past)…...[imperfecto]………………….comprabas
--y’all found……………………[pretérito]…………………….encontraron
4. Review yesterday’s homework: 5-7 & 5-8.
5. Begin the homework.
Homework: 5-9 #1 (EVERYTHING translated).
miércoles 27 de enero de 2010
miércoles, el veintisiete de enero del dos mil diez
Today’s Agenda:
1. Listen to our song of the week: “Bonito.” Nice job catching the next two missing words: empuja, hay.
Cultural note: Nice job noticing the subtle pronunciation difference in this song! Distinción is the term used to describe the “th” sound you heard for ce, ci, and z. This pronunciation difference (distinción) is typical of Spanish speakers from Spain. It is not used in Latin America. Careful not to term it a lisp!!! It is technically not a lisp (it is intentional, and the th does not apply to s sounds). It is sometimes considered offensive if distinción is termed a lisp.
There are many myths around the "origin" of distinción. All stories (such as a king from centuries ago who had a lisp) are considered to be just stories.
2. Receive our next pink packet for chapter six, and define some of the vocabulary.
Cultural note: Quick discussion about some of our clothing terms: shorts, jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes. In much of Spain and Latin America, these casual clothing items are seen as too casual for many everyday activities. A “business casual” appearance would be the best choice for most days. For instance, it would not be considered the best choice to wear shorts to a museum or doctor’s appointment. Shorts are usually only considered appropriate as beach wear. Another example is that you would not wear jeans to a nice restaurant or often even to a university class.
Homework: None, though making flashcards for our new chapter six vocabulary is highly recommended.
Español Dos (2):
Today’s Agenda:

martes 26 de enero de 2010
martes, el veintiséis de enero del dos mil diez
Today’s Agenda:
1. Practice spelling unknown words using our knowledge of Spanish phonetics.
We already know the following about Spanish phonetics:
Spanish.......=...English
j….…….........=…h
h………........= …(silent)
k……...........=…not used in spelling Spanish words; a c is used instead
w….............=…not used in spelling Spanish words
ñ……...........=…ny
ll……….......=…y
rr………......=…rrrrrr….(rolled sound)
ge,gi........=…hey,he
ga,go,gu..=…ga,go,gu
We added the following new information today:
ce,ci……....=…say, see
ca,co,cu...=…ca,co,cu
double letters = double letters are common in English (mm, nn, pp), but VERY uncommon in Spanish. Technically ll and rr aren’t double letters (they’re just a special Spanish letter). You will periodically see cc in Spanish to make a hard “k” sound.
2. Listen to our new song of the week: “Bonito.” Quick word search for "thing," "place," "each day." Nice job catching the first missing phrase: el día. Quick discussion about how el día is irregular.
3. Finish working on yesterday’s crosswords.
Homework: Finish both crosswords for tomorrow.
Español Dos (2):
Today’s Agenda:
1. Receive the second part of our final exam.
2. Listen to our song of the week: “Desde que llegaste.” Nice job catching the first three missing words: frío, oigo, desde.
3. Practice our gestures.
4. Receive a list of 34 essential Spanish 2 questions and answer the first ten in table groups. These essential Spanish 2 questions are very important, so don’t lose this page!
5. Discuss the imperfect tense, and how it is used for description in the past. Our preterite tense is for action in the past.
Remember, if you hear “-ed,” you will be using the PRETERITE.
“skated,” “danced,” “hopped,” lived”
If you hear “used to ____,” “was/were ___ing,” or “would ___” (past), you will be using the IMPERFECT.
“used to skate,” “was dancing,” “would hop” (in past)
6. Begin the homework.
Homework: 5-5, 5-6 (evens translated, as always!)

**If you struggled with these, you MUST keep your yellow “¿Qué hiciste…?” page out on Mondays for this activity. Do not take it for granted that you produce these perfectly yet. Being able to produce all of these well will greatly help as we officially learn more about the past tense in chapter 6.
