Español Uno (1):

Today’s Agenda:

1. Review a list of Spanish classroom sayings to help us stay in Spanish as much as possible. What phrases are missing that you’d like to know how to say?

2. Listen to our new song of the week: “Bikini a lunares amarillo diminuto.” Nice job catching the first three missing words: vi, pude, nadie.

3. Practice our irregular yo song, both singing it and writing it.

4. Edit our stories. While it is not expected that your level 1 stories be perfect (that would be unlikely to happen!), there are some important corrections you are accountable for.

--(if needed) Make sure you included the word “that” (que) in your introductory phrase. For instance, “Había una mujer que se llamaba Betty.” Many level 1 students forget this important connecting word.

--(if needed) Do titles have proper notation? If you included a movie or TV show title, it should be in quotations. If you included a book title, it should be underlined.

--Do you have consistent gender & # agreement. Make sure everything matches in gender (una chica simpática) and number (unos calcetines feos).

--Is the story consistently in the PAST (with the possible exception of dialogue)?

--Check off the high-frequency phrases you used. How many did you include? Which could you have easily included as well?

5. Receive our pink packet for chapter 9 and begin to define some of our new vocabulary.

Homework: It would be wise to make flashcards for the ch. 9 vocabulary we defined in class.

miércoles, el veintiuno de abril del dos mil diez

Español Uno (1) y Dos (2):

Today’s Agenda:

…Well, it wasn’t what I planned, but today’s 40-minute conversation about Spanish, learning languages, studying/living abroad, etc. was fascinating and worth the sacrifice of what we were going to originally do.

Thanks for sharing all of your curiosities with me! If you missed class, here are some of the questions you raised:

--Does it really matter if you “punch” (stress) a word correctly in Spanish? Why?
--“I’ve noticed a lot of Spanish speakers don’t use accents when writing online. Why?”
--What are some stereotypes people in Spain have about the US?
--“Are you going to talk in Spanish to your baby, Profe Nick?”
--“When is your baby due?...Will we get to see pictures?”
--When should I study abroad?
--“Can we learn some swear words in Spanish?”
--“Why don’t we use the text in class?”
--"Why did you want to learn Spanish, Profe Nick? Do your family members speak it, too?"
--“How long did you study Spanish, Profe Nick?”
--How long does it take to become “fluent” / “proficient”?
--“How long did it take you, Profe Nick, to become fluent?”
--Does immersion really work?
--Do language videos for babies really work?
--Does the Rosetta Stone software work?
--When do Spanish speakers start studying English (or other languages) in school?
--“What grade equivalency am I? Do I speak/write Spanish like a 5th grader?”
--Why do kids sometimes refuse to speak back in their parents’ language if surrounded by English?
--Will it be harder to learn another foreign language?
--Is language-learning the same in college?
--Will I be “fluent” by the end of Spanish 4?
--Which teaches you a language better: studying in a class or living abroad?
--Why do little kids seem to pick up another language easier?
--“What’s your favorite food from a Spanish-speaking country? What’s your favorite word in Spanish?”
--Is Spanish really different in Spain and Mexico?
--etc.

See you tomorrow!

“Me caigo, conozco, digo, doy…hago, pongo, salgo, soy…tengo, traigo, vengo, veo…oigo, sigo, sé, voy, estoy.”

4. Discuss circumlocution (describing a word in a roundabout way when you can’t come up with the specific word). We naturally use circumlocution in English when we forget a term. This skill is even more important for us in Spanish, as we won’t always have the specific vocabulary we need, but we should still be able to get across the meaning.

Class example: el refrigerador

--Es un lugar donde hay comida fría.
--Es un aparato que está en la cocina.

--Es donde la gente pone la comida y la leche.
